‘Mrs and Mr’ is a brief look into an unfortunate but common scenario that occurs in households around the world involving migrants who rely on a spouse visa to live and work in a particular country. My vision for the film stemmed from my belief that people’s ethics and decisions are not always easily explained or driven by logic, but rather by instinct and feeling — and from the belief that the way particular systems are set up can often work in direct conflict with this.
The crux of the idea came from the true story of a former colleague I worked with who was forced to leave the country after being divorced by his wife, who was the sponsor for his visa, following him having an affair.
The building blocks came when I began relating experiences of my own to the situation, including the frustrations I encountered while trying to secure my own visa for the United States.
I also became interested in the emotional state and frame of mind that might lead someone to have an affair even when the risks and stakes are so drastically high. This led to exploring the breakdown of a relationship over time, and how that can breed insecurity and resentment.
The film was shot over two and a half days in rural East Cheshire, England, against the scenic backdrop of a Christmas-decorated farmhouse and cottage. The setting helped encapsulate the isolated, reflective mental framework of the main character. The film was shot on a Sony FX6.
